WAITING – Conference

by Mark Kantalinsky-Vasilyev

Presented at the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture  Mies van der Rohe Awards 2026 at Palau Victoria Eugenia

The presentation of WAITING by Mark Kantalinsky, held in Barcelona as part of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Awards 2026 / Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026.

Developed together with Clàudia Jansana-Rodon, WAITING is an ongoing artistic and architectural research project examining how architecture shapes and reflects the refugee experience.

Through video, art installation, spatial research, and personal testimony, the project explores the condition of waiting embedded in shelters, transit zones, refugee support centres, and institutional spaces — places where vulnerability, memory, care, and survival intersect.

Starting from the experience of forced displacement from Crimea and Ukraine, the research retraces the journey from Kyiv to Barcelona, investigating the relationship between architecture, power, and human presence under conditions of migration and uncertainty.

Thank you to everyone who joined the presentation at Palau Victòria Eugènia.
